“Living Healthy with Lupus Day” Event Launches Lupus Awareness Month 2010 in NYC
Beauty and Health Strategies Address Major Need
In its 40th year of service to New York City’s lupus community, the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation kicked-off Lupus Awareness Month 2010 at the 3rd annual “Living Healthy with Lupus Day” at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
More than 125 women with lupus attended the sold-out program designed to give them the opportunity to focus on feeling better—inside and out.
Appearance is a top concern of people with lupus, according to preliminary results of a recent Foundation and Yeshiva University survey of 300 New Yorkers with the disease. Early findings indicate that lupus-related changes in appearance due to medicine side effects and the disease itself are highly emotionally distressing, and can cause significant depression.
To address this need, the free afternoon offered complimentary mini-workshops and demonstrations from makeup artists, massage therapists, health food experts, hairstylists, and more. Cosmetics giveaways were provided by Avon, Cover Girl, Dermablend, Mary Kay, and L’Oreal.

Also featured: expert advice on sun protection, hair how-to’s, and stress-relief techniques to beat the body blues. At lunch a panel of women with lupus discussed their strategies for “living well” with lupus.
“Lupus Awareness Month is a key time for us to bring broad public attention to this devastating disease,” said Margaret Dowd, executive director of the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation. “If you have lupus—you are not alone. While we strive for a cure, we work each day to bring hope and support such as the advice and strategies at this successful Living Life Healthy with Lupus Day to all New Yorkers living with lupus.”
