Triathletes Cross the Finish Line for Lupus!
Eleven from Team Life Without Lupus Complete the Circuit, Raise Funds, Inspire Hope
On this sweltering Sunday morning in July, 11 determined Team Life Without Lupus members completed the 10th Annual Nautica New York City Triathlon, marking personal victories while simultaneously raising critical funds—nearly $35,000— for research to find a cure for lupus.
Despite some dramatic obstacles, all finished the course, swimming a 1,500M stretch of the mighty Hudson River, bicycling 40K along the West Side Highway, and then lacing up their running shoes for a final 10K through Central Park.
Focused and Determined
Triathlete Thomas Eason kept his mother—who has lupus—in mind as he endured the discomforts of the day’s bruising heat and high humidity. “[My mom] Jamie and our family have been coping with the disease over the past few years, and it has been a difficult struggle for our entire family.” http://www.firstgiving.com/thomaseason
Triathlete Peter Brush refused to let a split bike fork deter him from plowing on, teeth clenched and finish line-focused. He describes the harrowing scene:
“I crashed into a bench coming out of transition with all the craziness, broke my [bike] fork but still managed to finish the bike race, but it made cycling so slow… I was dead last. It was not the smartest move, clearly very dangerous as if it snapped off I could have gone flying…going downhill was like going uphill I had to peddle so hard to get the darn thing going…”
“I will never forget coming out of transition…running across 72nd Street all by myself into the park. People kept cheering for me, I guess they though I was "special"... "you can do it! Keep up the good work! Almost there!" And all I wanted to do was tell them that my bike broke and that I'm really not that slow!
Triathlete Timothy Bechen, sweated it out through each triathlon stage because “it is my turn to do my part.” On his fundraising page http://www.firstgiving.com/forjennabechen Timothy asks for donations with the words, “I humbly ask for your financial support in this endeavor, supporting not only my racing on this team, but more importantly supporting by brave wife Jenna as she lives every day with lupus.”
Making a Difference for Lupus
This year’s Team Life Without Lupus triathlon effort followed a stellar showing in the 2009 ING New York City Marathon—the celebrated marathon’s first-ever lupus charity team. That team raised a remarkable $100,000 for lupus research.
And a few months ago, 50 runners and walkers for Team Life Without Lupus completed the new “Stadium to Sea” route in the LA Marathon, raising over $57,000 for patient programs and research grants.
