Meet our 13-Year Old Fundraiser!

Brianna Wasserman with her parents Andrea and Neil, and her brother Evan.

Meet our latest young supporter -- 13-year old Brianna Wasserman – who raised $518 for the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation for her Bat Mitzvah Tzedukah project!

Brianna was inspired by her Aunt Susan – Susan Golick – who started the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation 45 years ago when she was first diagnosed with lupus as a young woman. Susan and her parents began the Foundation with the dream of a “Life Without Lupus” for the 1.5 million Americans suffering from this disease.

Determined to make a difference in the cause Aunt Susan began, Brianna took on fundraising with a passion.   She used social media to ask family, friends and her community to support her project, and got an immediate outpouring of response. She set up “shop” at her school and local businesses to sell the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation’s awareness-building orange “Life Without Lupus” wristbands and found people were surprisingly willing to donate and share their own experiences with lupus.

“I learned that there are so many kind, thoughtful people out there who really want to help others. This experience will make me think about what others go through every day, and maybe I will be more aware and a little nicer to people.”

Lupus Awareness Month in May educated people around the world about lupus and encouraged them to speak with their healthcare providers if they had common symptoms of the disease. But now it’s time to turn awareness into action. Like Brianna, you can help make a difference for someone with lupus. Some ways you can fundraise in your community include:

  • Sell the “Life Without Lupus” wristband at your school, shopping center, library.
  • In lieu of traditional favors, thank your friends and family for sharing your Bar/Bat Mitzvah or wedding day with a gift that makes a lasting difference. You can give unique and meaningful favors that honor your guests or memorialize a loved one by making a donation to the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation.
  • Create your very own online charity registry when planning your wedding. In addition to a traditional gift registry, guests can make donations in your name as their wedding gift to you. Find out more at or
  • Support the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation through your company’s annual corporate giving campaign. It is a convenient way to direct a percentage of your paycheck or a fixed dollar amount to the lupus cause.
  • Join us at the Alliance for Lupus Research walks to cure lupus across the country.
